This will come as no surprise to Ford truck lovers… The Texas Auto Writers Association named the 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor the “Off-Road Truck of Texas.”

For three days, Texas Auto Writers Association members put trucks through rigorous testing at the Knibbe Ranch near San Antonio.

“Members of Texas Auto Writers pushed Raptor to the limit on one of the most rugged off-road courses in Texas,” according to Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Raptor again showed why it’s the most capable off-road pickup in America, as well as America’s favorite.”

garner new fans and sales success with record sales performance eight of the past 10 months and sales up 14 percent this year. With sales expected to remain strong, Ford is increasing the vehicles production and growing assembly from three trucks per hour to five.

Continuously improved each year since its debut, the new Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition – the latest variant – adds upgrades inside and out to further differentiate its appearance and to appeal to luxury truck buyers seeking uncompromised performance off-road.

Key attributes to Raptor’s impressive performance are functional design cues and segment-exclusive suspension technology. Raptor is 7 inches wider than a base F-150 to make room for the additional suspension components that enable its off-road capabilities.

In addition, there are internal triple-bypass shocks by FOX Racing Shox – a first on a production truck – give the Raptor 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches at the rear to handle tough terrain at high speeds. An electronic locking rear differential and Torsen® limited-slip front differential provide excellent capability for rock crawling and other low-speed off-road activities.

According to Ford, the industry-exclusive beadlock-capable wheels are available to further help increase grip in low-traction conditions, along with high-intensity discharge headlamps for improved visibility. Of course, SYNC® with MyFord Touch® is also available.

The Ford SVT Raptor is available exclusively with a 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to an electronic six-speed SelectShift Automatic® transmission with tow/haul mode. Raptor SuperCrew is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds, complementing its unparalleled off-road capabilities.

There are such a variety of alternatives in the SUV category making the decision process challenging. The 2014 Ford Flex features a twin turbo V-6 EcoBoost engine churning out 365 horsepower with 350 foot pounds of torque.  The Flex produces this impressive power while still delivering similar fuel economy. Fighting for a close second is the Dodge Durango with 290 horsepower and 260 foot pounds of torque. Coming in last is the GMC Acadia with 288 horsepower and 270 foot pounds of torque.

Moving inside these top-of-the-line SUVs, you will notice ample space coupled with several comfort features.  Claiming the top spot again, is the Ford Flex with more rear passenger head, leg, and hip room.  The Flex also comes available with leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood inlay, ambient lighting, solar tinted glass, front-row center console and comfortable seating for seven.

The GMC Acadia is sufficient in space with ample front room and available heated and cooled seats. Finding their way to keep up, the Dodge Durango offers less interior room. The unique shifter may catch your eye. It resembles an old radio dial.

The GMC Acadia, offers the Intellilink system,  but according to Edmunds.com, “Intellilink is sometimes slow to process touch inputs, which can make it frustrating to use.”

Protecting your family and having the latest safety features is must have in a family SUV. This category was a three-way tie with all of these vehicles having advanced safety measures and receiving excellent safety ratings.
